Biochar is a stable carbon material produced through the pyrolysis of natural biomass. It is used to improve soil structure, increase nutrient retention, and support long-term soil fertility. Suitable for both gardening and agricultural use across different soil types.
Key features
- Highly porous structure that stores water and nutrients
- Long-lasting carbon form that remains stable in soil
- Produced from sustainably sourced biomass through pyrolysis
Benefits
- Improves soil fertility and supports consistent plant growth
- Reduces nutrient loss and increases efficiency of fertilization
- Enhances water retention while maintaining good soil aeration
What Is It Used For and How
Incorporating into soil
- For new beds or fields mix biochar into the top 10 to 20 cm of soil before planting
- For established areas loosen the soil and work it into the upper layer to gradually improve structure
- Application rate use approximately 5 to 15 percent by volume depending on soil condition
2. Pre activation
Before application it is highly recommended to charge biochar with nutrients by mixing it with compost manure or liquid fertilizers. This step helps fill its pore structure and improves performance in the soil.
3. Surface application
For existing plants apply a thin layer and lightly incorporate it into the topsoil. For larger areas spread evenly and mix into the surface layer.
4. Potting mixes
Blend biochar with potting soil to improve structure and moisture control. Use 10 to 30 percent depending on plant needs and substrate type.
5. Water and nutrient balance
Biochar helps retain moisture while keeping the soil well aeratedIt supports nutrient availability in the root zone and reduces leaching especially in lighter soils
